Kaltura Application Discussion

If you would like to record your class presentation in a video, you can use Kaltrura, Zoom and other video editing tools.

To get Kaltura, in your website on Canvas, you can click My Media on the left list of tools (along with home gradebook, modules etc.). If you don't have 'My Media' button, you should go to Settings --> Navigation --> My Media (in the low tool box where inactive tools are kept) ---> Enable --> Save. Then My Media should appear on the left set of tools in your course.

The following video shows how to launch and use Kaltura:

  1. There are now so many people trying to upload that Kaltura is virtually stopped.

  2. I've also been having trouble throughout the day with the upload but everything appears to be working now. I recommend sharing the link to the recording directly with students (using the Kaltura interface), as opposed to linking to it directly within Canvas. The latter seems to have been causing some issues to my end. Also be sure to check if you are able to access the video by switching to 'Student View.' I've also reached out to some students to check the link and ensure it's working properly, which they tend to appreciate.

In the process of bandwidth woes with Kaltura, I've also experimented with recording narration directly from PPT (which is a bit clunky) as well as QuickTime (which could be limited to MAC users?) And I believe you can also 'initiate' a Zoom meeting to record narration and video for lectures and then post the recording link (i.e. vs. synchronous meeting capability). These are potential alternatives to consider...

    Wishing everyone well,
    Kate.

    Zoom:
Recordings in zoom are delayed 5-14 hours return time. They are adding servers (AWS). Recordings are not being lost. Jamie Hanson also noticed the “Your attendees are waiting” messages are hours behind. Not a big deal, just a little confusing. https://sites.google.com/umn.edu/onlinemeetingdashboard/home data is updating every hour at the top of the hour.

    Kaltura:
Media Space has some user experience issues and we're working with vendor to get resolved today. Processing delays - everybody is queued up and not being lost, just taking time to process.

OIT and ITSS are aware of problems and are working to resolve them. If you get specific error messages, take a screenshot and send them to help@umn.edu.
